Strawberry

One of the best fruits to grow in a balcony garden that receives ample sunlight throughout the day is the Strawberry. They are small, don’t grow too wide, and are easy to maintain. And the best part is that the pots in which you grow them don’t have to be too deep, just wide.

How to grow them?

Just buy some Strawberry runners from the nursery nearby and add them to wide pots. Make sure the soil is rich in compost and nutrients, and give it at least 5 hours of sunlight daily.

Cherry tomato

If you are wondering why Cherry tomatoes are on the list, it is because they are categorised as fruits, not vegetables. They grow quickly, are low-maintenance, can be grown straight from the seed, and only need some upward support.

How to grow them?

For starters, get good quality seeds or a sapling from the nursery, and plant it in cocopeat rich soil. Also make sure to feed it good compost and nutrients, and make sure that the pot is deep enough to install a trellis in.

Mini Papaya

A dwarf Papaya can also be grown in the balcony garden, but you will need to make sure that your balcony can hold and support heavy plants, and receives ample sunlight daily. They do well in large, deep, and wide containers and pots, and need high-maintenance for fruiting.

How to grow them?

When growing Papaya on a balcony, it is best to get a sapling or a grafted plant from the nursery nearby. Papaya needs full sun, a well-draining soil, atleast 14-16 inches deep pot, and good fertilisation for the fruit to start.

Lemon

A fruit that is best grown with a grafted plant to reduce the risk of pollination not happening is Lemon. Buy a grafted lemon sapling, add it to a pot that is about 12 inches deep, and make sure that it is a dwarf one, as heavier lemons could bear down on the plant in a small space.

How to grow it?

Even a grafted variety needs a lot of care, especially regular pruning as the leaves could take up the nutrients meant for the Lemon fruits.

Dragon fruit

Another amazing fruit to grow in a balcony that receives atleast 6 hours of sunlight is the Dragon fruit. It grows vertically so is good for small spaces, but will need extra support as the fruit climbs up.

How to grow it?

Dragon fruit can grow from both seed and sapling, but the seed variety would take a long time. Make sure to feed it organic compost occasionally, fertiliser once a month, give it 6+ hours of direct sunlight, and even the flowers will delight you.
