Spring onions are one of the easiest to grow plants, and need very little maintenance. And to put a cherry on the cake, you can also grow spring onions in just water, without any soil, in a deep jar. Here are the 10 perfect steps to grow Spring onions in the kitchen garden.

To start the Spring onion plant at home, the first thing to do is to buy fresh spring onions from the market. Make sure that it has healthy white roots on the bottom, and that they are fresh and crisp when you buy them.

Now, when you get back home, cut the green tops off the spring onions, and leave atleast 3 inches of the white base below with the roots intact.

Now, in a small transparent mason jar, or in a deep bowl add some water, preferably RO water, and sterilise it well with hot water beforehand. Make sure the jar is deep enough to cover the white stalks of the onion.

Once the jar is clean, fill it with water to about 75%, and add in the spring onion white stalks. Make sure the roots are completely submerged in water, and the white stalks are partially covered.

Now keep this jar or container near a sunny window where it gets atleast an hour or two of sunlight daily. And after an hour keep it somewhere it will receive indirect sunlight as excess sun can damage the leaves.

Change the water every 3-4 days, and keep it a mix of warm and cold water. Warm water stimulates growth, and changing the water every few days will make sure there is no algae growth.

In about 7-10 days the green stalks will start sprouting from the base, and the roots too will be longer. At this stage, you can change the container to a deeper one if you wish to.

Once the green stalks grow to atleast 8 inches and are drooping just a bit, it is time to cut and harvest the leaves. Use sharp scissors and cut only the amount you immediately need.

After 3-4 cycles of harvesting, which could be in about 2 months, it would be apt to add a liquid fertiliser in fresh water to keep the plant growing. After 4 harvests, when you change the water, trim the roots a little and add some fertiliser in the new water.

If the spring onion stalks are not producing new leaves anymore, and you have already fertilised the water twice, it is time to change the root base. Buy new spring onions with healthy roots, and repeat the process.
