Elderly couple bludgeoned to death, gold looted from Erode farmhouse

In Erode district, an elderly couple, Ramasamy and Bakkiyammal, were murdered at their farmhouse in Vilakethi by burglars who stole over 15 sovereigns of gold. The police, led by SP Sujatha, are investigating the crime, forming ten special teams to apprehend the murderers. This incident has heightened fears among elderly residents in farmhouses, recalling similar unsolved cases in the region.

An elderly couple, Ramasamy and Bakkiyammal, were murdered at their farmhouse in Erode district, Tamil Nadu. Burglars looted over 15 sovereigns of gold ornaments before escaping.

COIMBATORE: Unidentified burglars murdered an elderly couple at a farmhouse in Vilakethi near Sivagiri in Erode district on Thursday. The burglars also looted more than 15 sovereigns of gold ornaments from the house and managed to escape.
The deceased were identified as Ramasamy, 75, and his wife Bakkiyammal, 65, from Vilankatuvalasu. They were farmers and lived alone at the farmhouse. Their son was residing at Muthur with family members. He tried to contact his parents over the phone in the last two days, but his calls went unanswered.
He requested a relative to check on his parents. On Thursday around 7 pm, the relative visited the farmhouse and found the elderly couple in a pool of blood. Ramasamy was found murdered inside the house, and his wife Bakkiyammal was found murdered outside the house.
Local farmers alerted the Sivagiri police, who rushed to the spot. Erode District SP Sujatha and Deputy Superintendent of Police (Perundurai sub-division) Gokulakrishnan visited the crime scene and sent the bodies to the Erode govt hospital for postmortem. Police confirmed that the couple were beaten to death by the burglars.

The burglars robbed more than 15 sovereigns of gold ornaments from the house. Superintendent of Police Sujatha said that there were no CCTV cameras in the farmhouse, but the area had some CCTV cameras. Ten special teams were formed to nab the murderers.
T Senthil Kumar, Inspector General of Police (IGP), Coimbatore zone, inspected the crime scene.
In 2024, an elderly couple and their son were brutally murdered by an unidentified gang who took away gold ornaments from the farmhouse at Avinashipalayam near Palladam in Tirupur district. The police were not able to trace the murderers, and the case was handed over to the Crime Branch-CID.
A few murder-for-gain cases were reported in Chennimalai, Kangeyam, and Arachalur areas from 2020 to 2023. The elderly people residing in the farmhouses are afraid to reside alone as the burglars targeted the farmhouses for gold ornaments. Meanwhile, Erode district police beefed up security in the farmhouse areas across the district.
