The Boston Red Sox tied their series against the Braves on a walk-off home run, but the victory didn't cure all of the team's ills. A large concern is shortstop Trevor Story. The veteran has remained healthy this season, but his batting statistics have not been impressive. The Red Sox were hoping for more, particularly after inking several high-end players last offseason. Currently, the Story is coming up short. And it's beginning to make its presence known.
Trevor Story’s bat is cold despite playing regularly
Trevor Story is in the fourth year of a six-year, $140 million contract. He's healthy but his bat has been anemic. To date this season, he's batting only .236 with 56 strikeouts, one of the highest in the American League. That's considerably less than his All-Star numbers from 2019 playing with the Rockies.
Manager Alex Cora indicated that although Story wanted to play more than 150 games this season, now they have to be cautious.
Alex Cora pinned importance on the fact that a player's contribution to the team is not just reflected in the number of games one plays. He pointed out that it is also significant to take note of the quality of the inputs a player makes during the game, indicating that the efficiency and impact of his/her performance are paramount to the success of the team.
Alex Cora might make a change if Trevor's story doesn't get better
Cora further explained that Story isn't the only player struggling to hit. The entire team has struggled to score runs.
"Like right now, I think offensively we got some holes and it's not because they're bad players or bad hitters. They're just going through a stretch right here."However, Story's issues are more prominent because of his large contract and his previous success. If things don't turn around soon, the Red Sox could have to bench him more regularly. Doing that might make the team earn better results or make things more complex.
